Patrick Mbullo Owuor is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Public Health at Wayne State University. He specializes in biocultural anthropology, focusing on the link between health and the environment, especially among vulnerable groups such as women and children. His research investigates the impacts of infrastructure and resource insecurities, including water, housing, and food, on health and well-being. His current project, “Neurological Gaze: An exploration of brain injuries among children living with neurological disorders in Kisumu, Kenya,” funded by Wayne State University, aims to a) understand the lived experiences and perceptions of parents and caregivers of children with brain injuries, tracing their journey through healthcare systems, b) explore the structural, technological, and cultural factors affecting neurological practices in the area; c) identify a low-cost, accessible biomarker for early diagnosis of neurological illnesses in children from low-resource settings; d) develop affordable assistive devices for children with neurological conditions; and e) analyze environmental and geospatial patterns of various neurological conditions in children across Kenya. Dr. Owuor is also a co-founder of Pamoja Community Alliance (formerly Pamoja CBO), where he has played a key role in managing multi-year, community-led HIV interventions totaling over $900,000, funded by the US government. At Pamoja, he has supervised field practicums for more than 50 students and contributed to various collaborative research projects, including clinical trials, implementation science studies, and proof-of-concept research involving multiple institutions and researchers from Europe, Canada, and the United States.
